Recent car hire customers in the USA have been left disgruntled after finding hidden charges added to their credit cards once their hire period had ended. The charges varied from cancellation fees to energy surcharges.
It is believed that some companies have began to add these charges to alleviate losses been felt in the current economic market.
Mr. Jim Swofford recently hired a car in the USA with leading car hire firm Hertz. Upon inspecting his credit card bill he found a five dollar charge which was unexpected. He contacted Hertz and was told it was a cancellation charge.
Mr. Swofford was upset by the charge as he was a regular customer of Hertz so asked to have a previous reservation he made cancelled. He was then told that this would cost him twenty five dollars. He was then told that if he choose not to show up to collect the hire car that he would be charged fifty dollars.
A man from Austin Texas also complained recently over a one dollar energy charge on his credit card claiming to have never had this charge before in his many years of hiring cars.
Hertz explained that the cancellation charge brought in back in December was only applicable to pre paid reservations and was used to cover the paperwork costs associated with the booking.

There is no doubt that it is a very difficult time financially for many of the worlds leading car manufacturers with sales reportably down by up to 20% on this time last year.
Hertz usually purchase over half a million cars every year however they have recently announced the launch of a car sharing club which is aimed at preventing people from buying cars. The scheme has been described as an “alternative to car ownership”.
Mr. Michael Taride (president of Hertz Europe) believes the scheme will appeal to people living in urban areas who don’t want any of the hassle which comes with owning a car.
For the time being the scheme (known as connect) will operate in Paris, New York and London with hopes to roll it out to further countries in 2009. There will be annual membership fees on top of regular rental costs.
Traditionally car manufacturing firms have offered buy back clauses to car hire firms. This meant that the car could be returned to the manufacturer after 6 months. However the low profit margins which this generated have now made these types of deals scarce. This means that car hire firms have to sell on the cars themselves.
If you need a rental car this Christmas then take a look at some of the seasonal offers we currently have. Many car hire firms are running out of cars in Seville at the moment because of the high demand at this time of year. We source cars from several suppliers so can still offer a wide variety of hire cars in Seville.

5% of Avis Europe staff are expected to lose their jobs due to unsustainable costs. 315 workers will be affected as Avis close several rental outlets. Plans are afoot to move staff from its business head office in Middlesex to Bracknell.
Avis and Budgets brands in Europe, Asia and the Middle East are currently run by Avis Europe. The company stated that bookings for the last quarter are down on previous years and now looked very unlikely to match last years volume.
Pascal Bazin of Avis explained that raising prices and cutting staff costs was the only way forward for Avis. Avis hope that these measures will save the company £13.6 million each year. It is still unclear as to who will lose their jobs but those working in Middlesex are expected to be the most affected though they will be offered roles elsewhere.
Avis also plan to cut down the number of seasonal staff they currently employ and will not be recruiting any new staff for the time being. Mr. Bazin believes the company will be in better shape in the coming years because of the current plans being made.
Losses sustained in the used car hire market have also affected Avis particularly in Spain.
